Coursework A - Blogs - Comparing Blogger and Twitter (micro blog) 09/09/10

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service, it is used for small posts and comments. "It enables its users to send and read other users messages" or otherwise known tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page."
The service is free and can be accessed by 'apps' on phones, the internet and even via sms messages on phones also. It has become very popular since it was created in 2006.

On the main page of the website the 'tweets' (posts) are listed. At the top of the page it shows the "top tweets" these are 'tweets' that have been posted within the last few hours. This is a good point of the website as it then allows the user to quickly see the most important tweets without actually logging in, this is said to be a good feature of the website. The front page also has 2 other good gadgets that are great points of the website.

These include:

a box with celebrities, businesses and people you may know and want to add. This saves time searching for people and can save time as you can easily and quickly click on the picture of the person and choose to follow them within seconds.

a moving reel with 'trending topics' flowing that can be clicked on. This can be a good gadget as it shows you the most popular topics that have been mentioned in the 'tweets' (posts). E.g. one tweet is asking about when the programme waterloo road is on, and other users have commented and answered. This may be a question you wanted to know, so by clicking and searching you may find the answer without having to tweet and ask, saving yourself time.

Below shows photos of the home/main page showing the top tweets, 'trending topics' reel and the box showing the celebrities, businesses and friends that you may know and want to choose to follow, and the other showing the realtime results of the trending topics of 'Waterloo Road'.

Twitter has many good features compared to Blogger. There are many differences between both the websites.

Twitter only allows you to enter up to 140 characters as a tweet. This may be a concern as many people may want to write something in more depth, which is difficult when there is a maximum amount of characters and may have to shorten the wording which may not be clear to read and interpret. The print screen picture below shows that i have gone over the number of characters allowed by 17 characters, this would mean i would have to shorten the 'tweet' so that it has 140 characters or less. This isnt a problem on blogger.com as you have no maximum amount of characters that can be used.

A great advantage of using Twitter is that you can 'follow' celebrities. Famous celebrities may use twitter to update a 'tweet', people who have twitter accounts can then choose to add them to their 'followers' list and can see the celebrities tweet as soon as it is posted. This is great for the fans who desperatly want to know every detail they can about the celebrity, and many of the best celeb's even interact with their 'followers'. Having celebrities on twitter can unfortunatly cause problems. Many people set up fake celebrity accounts, this becomes a nuissance and rather annnoying after a while. Twitter have tried to sort this matter by verifying the real celebrity account and using a icon of a rosette with a tick inside and next to it saying 'account verified' This can be seen on the side of their profiles. This is different to blogger.com as celebrities cannot be followed.
Below are two photos one to show britney spears' twitter profile. The other is of Lily Allen's twitter profile with the account verified stamp shown.

Twitter can also be accessed via mobiles. This is great for convinience as you can immediatly update a 'tweet' whilst out and about. Although you may be able to access the internet on your phone and go to the blogger website, many phones now actually have the twitter 'apps' that when clicked on immediatly show the 'sign in' screen rather than having to take time to upload the internet, type in the url and wait for the website to load. The twitter 'app' is on most phones with internet now including the blackberry and the iphone. The 'app' was introduced due to the amount of people using the website and demand to use it often throughout the day. The 'app' has been made by the company as a much easier way to quickly access the site in a shorter amount of time, which pleases its users. Blogger does not currently have an 'app' for their website, so this is a great feature of Twitter being an advantage over Blogger. By Blogger not having an 'app' is not nesersarly a bad thing, as when the 'app' for example Twitter's, is downloaded onto the phone as soon as somebody comments or writes something to you, your phone will not stop buzzing with messages telling you so! which can be extremly annoying! This also leads onto another point that Twitter can be addictive, when you get the buzzing of messages from the 'app' you find yourself getting annoyed with it so you go onto it to sort it out and you find yourself on there for hours. When the buzzing starts its hard to ignore it, just like a child craving attention.

Twitter has many companies on the site signed up. If you mention a product from the company you may well find that the company will 'follow' you, this can become annoying when you are just mentioning something for example you have just bought and want to 'tweet' about. On Blogger.com this may happen, but very rarely. On Twitter it is a common occurance.

Another discussion between Blogger and Twitter is that many people claim twitter is hard to follow conversations, where as blogger is quite simple as its just comments which can be seen and replied to. Commenting on blogs can be very easily tracked, whereas Twitter may have many comments and conversations that are hard to track and read where you may find yourself having to scroll down the page to find a reply. This can be frustraiting and time consuming, so in this respect, Blogger would be at an advantage!

Summary of what iv'e added to my blog - Lesson 2

Blogger-

Today i have added Joe Bell's blog URL to my blog list, this is a fast and much more efficient way of looking at his blog. It takes much less time. It also will show me in a glance all the information from one place which is alot easier. I then added the 'apple' and the 'ASlevel IT' blog to the list.

I also added a picture from a website using a html code. The picture makes my blog look a little more interesting.

I have also added links to some of my favourite websites i visted often. This saves a lot of time typing out the web address and can be very convienient at times.

I added a 'amazon music player' this enables people to listen to and play clips of the most recent music tracks via my blog. i chose to select to have this gadget on my blog as music is a big part of my life and i also find it a great way to listen to music for free as now many websites and computer programmes (itunes) charge users to pay to buy or play music!!

I have added a facebook/twitter 'share it' gadget, with a click of the mouse it takes you to the website ready to log in and share the page. This not only is a quick way to get onto both the social networking sights, but also promotes your/my blog.

I have added a mini calender to my profile, i added this simply for convinience. It is small, yet easy to read and is useful at times, especially trying to access a calender anywhere on the internet or on the computer.

Here is the design view for all the gadgets i have added:

Blogs Research - Lesson 1

1)Definition of blog:
to read, write or edit a shared on-line journal.

2) Why do people use blogs?
Blogs are different to normal sites as blogs you can interact with people much more than you can do on a website, blogs allow you to also "post written text, audio and video and have it online within minutes, unlike normal traditional static websites."

3)What are the advantages and disadvantages of a blog?
One advantage of blogs is the freedom of speech, the blogger can post anything from interests to expressing how theyre feeling.
Another is that it can be used as a diary, where daily extracts can be posted.
They can also be used to share knowledge between both the blogger and the readers.
Friends can be made online via blogs.
One disadvantage is maintainance, if the blogger does not constantly update posts they have loose followers/readers. One more disadvantage is that 'most people don’t have very much to say that’s interesting,', the readers may also become irritated by the grammer and spelling as the post may not be clear and easy to read.

4)Find 3 interesting news stories about blogs and how they affected peoples' lives.
Kevin Pietersen- The cricketer wrote on his twitter social networking page how annoyed he was after being dropped from the england squad and swearing. This lead to a heavy fine and loosing many followers on twitter.
Blogs on Twitter have caused response time of faster critical effect on cinema blockbusters such as the Harry Potter Films and Burno, therefore effecting the numbers of cinema goers and subsequently loss of revenue. This is reported on Reuters.
Alan Carr- The comedian was repremanded after tweeting about Lily Allen not attending his Tv chat show. He used bad language and showed disrespect towards her leading to him loosing many followers and fans.

5)How are comments useful on a blog?
Comments help both the blogger and reader. The blogger themselves get feedback that can help for future posts, the feedback may also give the blogger more ideas for future posts.

6)
This shows how to use the blog...by clicking edit; another tab pops up showing how to edit the title etc of the gadget that you chose to edit. By clicking 'add gadget' another tab pops up showing more gadgets to add to your blog page.

Here are some print screen shots to show how to edit the background, template and layout. After selecting the colour/template/layout you click 'apply to blog' which basically edits your blog and saves the changes you have made.
