I interviewed my dad on Facebook and its features
Do you use Facebook often?
Yes, a few times a week.
Do you find it an easy way to interact with friends all over the world?
Yes, its a great free way to talk to others and see pictures from Facebook friends from the other side of the world who I do not have the chance to see very often.
Do you use Facebook live?
No, but I have heard from others how successful it is.
Do you use the Facebook Chat feature?
Yes
Do you find this a good feature of the website, e.g. does it work well, easy to use etc?
The feature does not always work but overall it is a great interactive, instant way of talking to others. It also shows your Facebook friends who are currently online which can be a convenient.
Have you set up a Facebook event or have attended some before?
I havent set one myself but have attended some. I find it an easy way to quickly send invites to certain people as I know they will see the invite quickly and tell me if they can make it rather than sending an invite in the post which could take a few days to be received and then for me to receive a reply. So it saves time and can save money on postage stamps.
Do you have a phone that supports the Facebook application that you use regulary?
Yes, I use it regularly and it can be a easy way to quickly sort my notifications and update a status.
Are there any other features of Facebook that you find useful
Fan pages can be an entertaining feature of the site, seeing how other users share the same interests.
Tagging of photos is a great way to keep in touch with your past. It keeps me updated in any photos of me that my Facebook friends have uploaded.

Myspace
MySpace is a social networking website. Its headquarters are in Beverly Hills, California. MySpace became the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006. By late 2007 into 2008, Myspace was considered the leading social networking site, and consistently beat out main competitor Facebook in traffic. When Facebook launched new features in an effort to attract a variety of users, Myspace found itself in a continuing decline of membership. As of July 2010, the site was ranked 25th in Internet traffic, opposed to the 2nd position held by Facebook.
Profile customization:
MySpace allows users to customize their user profile pages by entering HTML into such areas as "About Me", "I'd Like to Meet", and "Interests".
Videos and flash-based content can be included this way. Users also have the option to add music to their profile pages via MySpace Music, a service that allows bands to post songs for use on MySpace.
A user can also change the general appearance of his or her page by entering CSS (in a <style> ... </style> element) into one of these fields to override the page's default style sheet using MySpace editors. This is often used to tweak fonts and colors and add a background.
There are several independent web sites offering MySpace layout design utilities which let a user select options and preview what their page will look like with them.
Bulletins:These are posts that are posted on to a 'bulletin board' for the user's MySpace friends to see. Bulletins can be useful for contacting an entire friends list without resorting to messaging users individually. Many users use bulletins to send event details for their friends to see, this may be a bad thing as friends you have who may not be invited to the event but see the details which may end up being a big problem. As, unlike Facebook, myspace have no 'event type' features on the site users find this the only way of saying the detailing or by messaging, but bulletins seem to be used more as they are sent to all the friends at once rather than selecting each friend when sending a message. Facebook has a sort of bulletin based feature but they are called 'notes' and are never deleted unlike bulletins that are deleted after 10days. So here Facebook is seen to be at an advantage over Myspace.
Myspace on Mobile (App):
Like Facebook, Myspace can be accessed via mobile 'apps' that are downloaded onto the phone. It is free (apart from internet access) and is very popular. Like Facebook it is a more simplified version of the full site.

Social Networking
Facebook
Facebook live: a live streaming video channel that is intended to keep Facebook users updated to what is happening on the social networking site. The service, powered by Livestream, will feature videos from Facebook staff members and celebrity interviews, but not designed for Facebook users to showcase their own videos. All the content shown on Facebook Live will have some tie-in with Facebook products, features, or how people are using the site. Facebook said this is not an opening to get them into the video distribution space. The first official guest was the leading actress in the television series 'Ugly Betty'.
Chat:
In 2008 Facebook Chat was released to the entire Facebook user base. Users are only able to chat with their Facebook friends and on a one-to-one basis, although a user may chat with multiple friends simultaneously through separate chat interfaces. This is an instant messaging service with messages being sent to and from users within seconds, it is a cheap way to talk to people across the world costly nothing but the internet access. Unlike comments or 'writing on walls' you can only talk to youre facebook friends who are online at the same time as you are.
Events:
Facebook events are a way for members to let friends know about upcoming events in their community and to organize social gatherings. Events require an event name, network, host name, event type, start time, location, and a guest list of friends invited. Events can be Public or Private. Private events cannot be found in searches and are by invitation only. People who have not been invited cannot view Private event description, Wall, or photos. They also will not see any Feed stories about the event. This is a great way to send paperless invites for example parties, charity events etc, it can be a quick way to organise things by simply entering the information, spelling mistakes can be edited repeatidly unlike on paper where a new invite may have to be used or crossing out which may look untidy. On the otherhand a few people may find this a problem as many people do not actually have facebook, or some may only log on at a certain time, so the event invite may not reach them and they may miss out.
Phone app:
Many new phones offer access to Facebook via applications or 'apps'. This is a more compact, simplified version of the actual site. It is used by millions of people a day as it is very convenient to up date your account whilst you're out and away from computer access. It may use up some of the MB of internet that phone services provide on phone contracts but is otherwise costing the same as going onto any other site on the internet. It has the same features of the main sight including the newsfeed (stream of statuses and posts from your facebook friends, events, groups and profile pages etc.

Coursework A - Newsgroups, social networking Part A
Social Networking, newsgroups etc.
Social Networking: The interaction between a group of people who share a common interest; Using social contacts to network; Using internet's network groups (such as Facebook and Twitter) to network and communicate between consumers and businesses. It also allows you to identify your contacts and establish a link between you and each of your contacts.
Web conferencing: used to conduct live meetings, training, or presentations via the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet.
Discussion Boards: Forums on the Internet where users can post messages for others to read.
Bulletin Boards: A Bulletin Board System, or BBS, is a computer system running software that allows users to connect and log in to the system using a terminal program. Once logged in, a user can perform functions such as uploading and downloading software and data, reading news and bulletins, and exchanging messages with other users. It is an online information resource where individuals may post information that is of interest to others. Virtual communities often form around bulletin board systems (BBS). Although bulletin boards existed on systems that preceded the World Wide Web, most are now Web-based.
Below is a photo of one of the very first bulletin boards:
Newsgroups: messages posted from many users in different locations. The term may be confusing to some, because it is usually a discussion group. Newsgroups are technically distinct from, but functionally similar to, discussion forums on the World Wide Web.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Social networking
Advantages
- You can promote your site or business for free- Nowadays many big companies have specialists on human resources that search for profiles in these kind of sites to recruit new collaborators. If you´re looking for a job you can create a profile (a serious, professional and complete profile) and you might be discovered and recruited by a company.
- Keeping in touch- It is easier to talk to people all over the world without the cost of phoning or sending a letter, it takes just the cost of using the internet.
- Sharing mulitple points of view- many people may choose to sign up to a social networking site to discuss their beliefs and opinions and to listen to other points of view.
- You get to meet new/different people - some may see this as a disadvantage as not always can meeting people online be a good idea, but overall many people on these sites are genuine and have chosen to become a user of the website because of the reasons why you have chosen to open an account too.
- Harassment and stalkers - People can easily harass you which can then lead to having a stalker online and in the real world.
- Time consuming- You may find yourself on there for ages, and it will end up taking up your whole night.
- Addiction - Many people have actually become addicted to social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter- they feel the need to go onto the website whenever they can and have to gain access as much as possible.
- Fake accounts - many accounts are sadly made for people who are not actually the person that is seen on the website. Many people choose to create fake account with pictures of somebody they are not. This not only wastes peoples time but can become very annoying.
Advantages
- Available to anyone with a computer and Internet access.
- Lowest cost delivery.
- Participants may attend a meeting from their normal work stations or home without travel-saving costs and time. It can also be much more convenient as you can fit in other activities rather than spending that time travelling to and from a place for a meeting.
Disadvantages - The picture quality may be bad due to low resolution.
- Participants may not have high quality Internet Access which can lead to 'jerky' camera movements or loss of sound.
- Meeting quality is based on the quality of attendee's Internet Access and computer capabilities.
Advantages
- They allow you to build relationships with visitors.
- They may allow you to get educational information on your site.
- They allow you to join and read forums at any time convenient to you, catching up with messages already posted.
- You can reply at once, or go away and think about your answer before coming back to reply; or indeed, as in a real discussion, you can simply listen without contributing at all.
- If necessary individual users can be temporarily ‘blocked’, you can also select your post to be from 'anonymous' if needed, so that your identity is kept private.
- Posts may not be easily read due to people shortening wording and using slang.
- They involve a tremendous amount of work to get them started, this takes time and then even more time is needed to wait for comments to appear about the discussion itself.
- Many users may post inappropriate posts or spam to forums which again takes time to delete the posts. Some posts may even contain a virus which can become annoying to get rid of and takes more time up.
- They need to be maintained as much as possible. They really need to be checked up on once a day to see if any posts need deleting or if any are of use and you need to send a reply.
